Long before portable electric vehicles and compact personal mobility devices became popular, Mazda had already created one of the most unusual transportation concepts ever built. In 1991, Mazda introduced the Mazda Suitcase Car, a tiny motorized go-kart that could be folded and stored inside a suitcase.

The project was created through Mazda’s internal innovation program called Fantasyard, which encouraged young engineers to develop creative ideas beyond traditional vehicle designs. The goal was not to create a production vehicle, but to explore new possibilities in personal transportation.

From Suitcase to Small Vehicle

The idea behind the Mazda Suitcase Car was surprisingly simple. Engineers transformed a large hard-shell suitcase into the main body of a compact go-kart.

When closed, it looked like an ordinary suitcase. However, once opened, the components could be assembled into a small three-wheeled vehicle equipped with:

• A 33.6cc two-stroke engine
• Around 1.7 horsepower
• Three wheels
• Motorcycle-style handlebars
• Disc brakes and a horn
• A top speed of approximately 30 km/h

The assembly process was designed to be quick and practical. The user only needed to open the suitcase, attach the wheels, install the seat, and the vehicle was ready to move.

A Vision of Future Mobility

The Mazda Suitcase Car was a unique experiment in personal mobility. At a time when most vehicles were becoming larger and more complex, Mazda explored the idea of a lightweight machine that could be carried anywhere and used whenever needed.

Although it was never produced for sale, the concept attracted attention at automotive events because it showed a completely different approach to transportation.
