What Happens If You Put Petrol in a Diesel Car? It Could Get Very Expensive

Putting the wrong fuel into a car sounds like a simple mistake. But if you accidentally fill a diesel car with petrol, that small error can quickly turn into a very expensive mechanical problem.

Diesel and petrol engines may look similar from the driver’s seat, but their fuel systems are designed around completely different characteristics. And in a modern diesel car, putting petrol into the tank is something you definitely do not want to ignore.

Petrol and Diesel Do Not Play by the Same Rules

One of the biggest problems is lubrication.

Diesel fuel provides an important lubricating effect for components inside the fuel system, particularly the high-pressure fuel pump. Petrol has significantly different properties and provides much less lubrication.

Once petrol starts circulating through a diesel fuel system, the high-pressure pump can suffer excessive wear. In a modern common-rail diesel, this can become particularly serious because the fuel system operates at extremely high pressure.

And when a fuel pump starts wearing internally, things can get ugly.

Metal particles can potentially be produced and carried through the fuel system, contaminating components such as the injectors and fuel lines. What started as a simple refuelling mistake can therefore turn into a major repair.

If You Haven’t Started the Engine, Don’t Start It

This is the best case scenario.

If you realise that you’ve filled your diesel car with petrol before starting the engine, do not start it.

Don’t try to drive to a workshop. Don’t assume that adding more diesel will magically fix the problem.

The safest approach is to have the vehicle recovered and the fuel tank and relevant fuel system drained and cleaned before the correct diesel fuel is added.

Already Started the Engine?

That’s when the situation can become considerably more serious.

Once the engine is running, the incorrect fuel can circulate through the fuel system. The longer the car is driven, the greater the possibility of damage to expensive components such as the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors.

In severe cases, the entire fuel system may require extensive cleaning or replacement.

And suddenly, a few litres of the wrong fuel can become a repair bill worth far more than the original tank of fuel.

So, What Should You Do?

If you’ve accidentally put petrol into a diesel car:

Stop the engine.
Do not restart it.
Do not drive the car.
Call roadside assistance or a qualified mechanic.
Have the tank and fuel system properly drained.

The golden rule is simple: the sooner you stop, the better.

A wrong-fuel mistake doesn’t automatically mean your engine is destroyed. But continuing to drive after making the mistake can dramatically increase the potential damage.

Putting petrol into a diesel car is one of those mistakes that can happen to almost anyone, especially when you’re distracted at the fuel station. The important thing is not to panic and definitely not to “see if the car is okay” by driving it.

Because with modern diesel engines, that innocent little experiment could turn into a very expensive lesson.
