The Ukrainian government has officially urged the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) to reconsider its decision to relax restrictions on Russian and Belarusian drivers and teams competing in international motorsport events.
Through a formal letter sent to FIA leadership, Ukraine’s Ministry of Youth and Sports expressed strong opposition to the governing body’s updated policy, arguing that the move could allow motorsport to become a platform for sportswashing amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The FIA recently removed the requirement for Russian and Belarusian competitors to sign neutrality agreements before participating in FIA-sanctioned events. The decision followed updated guidance from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which encouraged international sports organizations to allow athletes from those countries to compete under certain conditions.
However, Ukrainian officials believe the change undermines the integrity and values of global sport.
“Allowing representatives of Russia and Belarus to return without strict restrictions sends the wrong message and risks ignoring the consequences of the ongoing conflict,” Ukrainian authorities stated in their appeal.
Ukraine Raises Concerns Over Sporting Integrity
Ukraine highlighted that numerous Ukrainian athletes have lost their lives during the war, arguing that motorsport organizations should consider the broader impact of their decisions.
According to Ukrainian officials, the return of Russian and Belarusian competitors could be seen as normalizing relations with countries involved in the conflict, while diminishing the suffering experienced by Ukrainian athletes and sporting communities.
The Ministry also pointed out that several international sports bodies have chosen to maintain stricter measures. Organizations such as World Athletics and the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) have continued enforcing stronger restrictions on Russian and Belarusian participation.
FIA Decision Remains Under Supervision
The FIA has not yet issued an official response to Ukraine’s protest. While restrictions on Russian and Belarusian competitors have been eased, the FIA’s ban on hosting officially sanctioned events in both countries remains in place.
The controversy highlights the difficult position faced by international sports organizations, which must balance political pressures, athlete participation rights, and the principle of keeping sport separate from geopolitical conflicts.
From a motorsport perspective, the FIA’s decision could become one of the most debated topics in the paddock, especially as teams, drivers, and fans continue to question whether international racing should prioritize inclusivity or maintain stronger sanctions during periods of global conflict.
