The Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix 2026 Sprint Qualifying delivered a major surprise as George Russell of Mercedes secured pole position for the Sprint Race at Zandvoort.
Russell produced a stunning lap in SQ3, setting the fastest time of 1:11.567 to beat his rivals in an incredibly tight qualifying session. The Mercedes driver edged out Lando Norris of McLaren by just 0.041 seconds, leaving Norris to start the Sprint from second place.
Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc put Ferrari in third position, finishing only 0.055 seconds behind Russell. The result highlights just how close the competition is at Zandvoort, with several teams showing almost identical levels of performance.

Antonelli Loses Ground After Floor Damage
Championship leader Kimi Antonelli had the pace to fight for a higher starting position, but his session was affected by a small issue with his Mercedes.
The young Italian driver suffered minor floor damage after running wide at the final corner during SQ2. Despite the setback, Antonelli managed to secure fifth place and remains in a strong position to score valuable points in the Sprint Race.
Verstappen Struggles at His Home Circuit
For home hero Max Verstappen, Sprint Qualifying was far from ideal. The Red Bull driver could only manage sixth place, ending the session 0.3 seconds behind Russell’s pole time.
Zandvoort has traditionally been one of Verstappen’s strongest circuits, especially with the massive support from Dutch fans. However, Mercedes and McLaren’s performance this weekend proves that Red Bull may face a serious challenge in the Sprint Race.
Liam Lawson Returns to Red Bull Seat
The session also marked Liam Lawson’s return to Red Bull Racing. Lawson replaced Isack Hadjar, who is currently sidelined due to a wrist injury.
In his first qualifying session back with Red Bull, Lawson finished 11th, narrowly missing out on a spot in the top 10.
Sprint Race Set for an Exciting Battle
The F1 Sprint Race at the Dutch GP 2026 will take place on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 17:00 WIB (12:00 local time in Zandvoort), featuring a total of 24 laps.
With Russell starting from pole, Norris and Leclerc right behind him, and Verstappen starting only sixth, the Sprint Race promises to deliver an intense battle from the opening lap.
This Sprint Qualifying session proves that Formula 1’s competitive landscape is becoming more unpredictable. Mercedes, McLaren, Ferrari, and Red Bull all appear capable of fighting at the front, with small mistakes making the difference between victory and disappointment.
