BMW is bringing together the worlds of automotive engineering and contemporary art with a special exhibition featuring 20 legendary BMW Art Cars. The exhibition showcases some of the most unique and valuable vehicles in BMW’s history, transforming high-performance machines into moving works of art.
The event, titled “BMW Art Cars – 20 Artists, 50 Years of Innovation. Reunited at BMW Welt”, will take place at BMW Welt in Munich, Germany, from July 29 to August 31, 2026. This marks the first time that the complete BMW Art Cars collection has been reunited in one location, celebrating five decades of creativity, design, and innovation.
The exhibition serves as the grand finale of the BMW Art Cars World Tour, bringing together all 20 vehicles created between 1975 and 2024 at BMW’s home in Munich.
The BMW Art Cars project began in 1975 when French racing driver and art collector Hervé Poulain invited American artist Alexander Calder to transform a BMW 3.0 CSL race car into an artistic creation. The car later competed in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans, establishing the foundation for one of the most famous collaborations between motorsport and the art world.
Among the highlights of the exhibition are some of the most recognizable Art Cars ever created, including the BMW 3.0 CSL by Alexander Calder (1975), the BMW 320i Group 5 by Roy Lichtenstein (1977), the legendary BMW M1 by Andy Warhol (1979), and the BMW 850 CSi by David Hockney (1995).
The BMW M1 Art Car by Andy Warhol remains one of the most celebrated pieces in the collection. Unlike many other Art Cars, Warhol personally painted the vehicle by hand, using bold colors and expressive brush strokes that reflected his unique artistic style.
The exhibition also features modern creations, including the BMW M3 GT2 Art Car by Jeff Koons (2010), which competed at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the latest addition to the collection, the BMW M Hybrid V8 Art Car created by Julie Mehretu in 2024.
Located at BMW Welt, Munich, the exhibition offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience the complete BMW Art Cars collection, where automotive technology, motorsport heritage, and contemporary art come together in a single display.
Through BMW Art Cars, BMW continues to prove that a vehicle can be more than just a machine. Each car becomes a canvas that tells a story about creativity, culture, innovation, and the endless connection between art and automotive design.
