The year 2016 became one of the greatest examples of Subaru’s extreme engineering capabilities when cutting-edge motorsport technology was combined with the bravery of a world-class rally driver.
The Isle of Man TT is widely considered one of the most dangerous racing events in the world. Traditionally, it is a motorcycle-only spectacle where riders push themselves to the limit on public roads surrounded by houses, stone walls, trees, and unforgiving corners.
However, in 2016, Subaru was given a special opportunity as part of its sponsorship activities to conduct a four-wheel Time Attack run on the legendary Snaefell Mountain Course.
Behind the wheel was Mark Higgins, a multiple-time British Rally Champion who had a unique advantage — he was born and raised on the Isle of Man. His knowledge of every corner, elevation change, and surface characteristic of the course allowed him to attack the route with incredible precision and confidence.
At first glance, the car looked like a regular Subaru WRX STI. But underneath the bodywork was a completely different machine. The project was developed with Prodrive, the legendary British motorsport company that played a major role in Subaru’s dominance during the World Rally Championship (WRC) era.
A 600 HP Boxer Engine With WRC DNA
The heart of this machine was a heavily modified 2.0-liter turbocharged Boxer engine built specifically for the challenge.
The result was an incredible output:
- Power: approximately 600 HP
- Torque: 542 Nm
- Transmission: WRC-inspired sequential gearbox
- Suspension: Custom asphalt setup designed to handle the rough and unpredictable Isle of Man roads
Despite producing massive power, the car still had to deal with real-world conditions. Unlike a smooth racing circuit, the Snaefell Mountain Course features bumps, elevation changes, and narrow sections of road. The suspension setup was crucial to keeping the car stable at extreme speeds.
Formula 1-Inspired DRS Technology
One of the most impressive features of the Subaru WRX STI Time Attack car was its Drag Reduction System (DRS), a technology inspired by Formula 1.
The rear wing featured an electronically controlled mechanism that could change its angle depending on the situation.
During high-speed sections, the wing would flatten to reduce aerodynamic drag and improve top speed. When braking or entering corners, it would return to an aggressive angle to generate maximum downforce and improve stability.
A technology normally reserved for Formula 1 was adapted for a rally-based machine attacking a public road course.
60.7 Kilometers at an Average Speed of 207 km/h

The Snaefell Mountain Course stretches for approximately 60.7 kilometers and features more than 200 corners.
Mark Higgins completed the full lap in an astonishing:
17 minutes 35.1 seconds
His record-breaking run included:
- Average speed: around 207 km/h
- Top speed: approximately 273 km/h
The incredible part was that this was not done on a modern race track with large run-off areas. Higgins pushed the Subaru through narrow public roads where walls, houses, and trees were only meters away from the car.
For comparison, Michael Dunlop holds the Superbike lap record at the Isle of Man TT, setting a time of 16 minutes 38.953 seconds on a Honda CBR1000RR-R in 2024, with an average speed of around 218.82 km/h.
The Perfect Combination of Engineering and Courage
The Subaru WRX STI Isle of Man Time Attack car was not simply a high-powered machine. It was a perfect combination of Prodrive engineering, Subaru’s rally heritage, and Mark Higgins’ incredible skill and bravery.
Hearing the roar of the turbocharged Boxer engine echo across the Snaefell Mountain Course showed exactly what happens when a rally car is pushed beyond its normal limits.
This machine was not just built to chase lap times — it was built to prove how far human courage and automotive engineering could go together.
