So, Who Will Be the New Hosts?
Top Gear has officially been confirmed to return after being off the air for around four years. The news was announced by the BBC during the Edinburgh TV Festival on Thursday, August 27, 2026. However, the BBC has not revealed when production of the new episodes will begin or when they will be broadcast.
The popular automotive show last went into production in 2022. Production was later suspended after presenter Freddie Flintoff suffered a serious crash while filming. Flintoff sustained facial and rib injuries after the three-wheeled vehicle he was driving overturned.
At the time, Flintoff hosted Top Gear alongside Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris. The return of Top Gear is expected to feature a completely different presenter lineup.
The BBC itself has yet to announce who will take over the hosting duties in the new version of the show. One name that has emerged as a potential candidate is British comedian and presenter Jimmy Carr.
However, the BBC has not confirmed whether Carr will actually become one of the new hosts of Top Gear.
Bringing back Top Gear is a bold move for the BBC. The show is not just about cars, but also about the chemistry between its presenters, humor, and the unique way it delivers automotive entertainment. Finding hosts who can create the same level of excitement and personality as previous generations will be the biggest challenge.
The legacy of Top Gear remains huge, especially from the era of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May, who turned the show into a global phenomenon. The new team will have to prove that Top Gear can build a new identity while still respecting the spirit that made it famous.
