The Jackie Chan Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX: A 50-Unit Collector’s Dream

Few cars combine Japanese performance, motorsport heritage, and Hollywood action history quite like the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Jackie Chan Special Edition.

Limited to just 50 units worldwide, this extremely rare Evolution was born from the collaboration between Mitsubishi, Ralliart, Japanese tuning house FireSports, and Jackie Chan, the legendary action star whose name became closely associated with Mitsubishi performance cars through some of his most famous films.

The special edition was developed around the Lancer Evolution VIII, while the project also incorporated styling influences and components associated with the FireSports-era Evolution IX tuning scene.

At the time, Jackie Chan had a close relationship with Mitsubishi and Ralliart, even serving as an honorary director of Ralliart. His relationship with the Japanese manufacturer was strengthened through movies such as Thunderbolt (1995) and Who Am I? (1998), where Mitsubishi performance cars played important roles.

That connection eventually helped create a car that was far more than another modified Lancer Evolution.

A 50-Unit Evolution Built to Stand Out

The Jackie Chan Special Edition received a number of exterior modifications intended to make it instantly recognizable.

A dedicated aerodynamic body kit was fitted, featuring extensive carbon-fiber elements, along with a specially designed rear spoiler and exclusive alloy wheels.

One of the most distinctive color choices associated with the car was Titanium Gray, giving the Evolution a darker and more sophisticated appearance compared with the brighter colors commonly associated with Mitsubishi’s rally-bred performance machines.

Inside, the theme became even more exclusive.

The cabin featured a black-and-red color scheme, while Jackie Chan’s name was incorporated into the interior through embroidery and special detailing. The headrests and door panels carried “Jackie” branding, turning the cabin into a reminder that this was not an ordinary Evolution.

Most importantly, every car received a numbered production plaque, identifying its place in the 50-unit production run.

From Movie Star to Collector Car

The significance of the Jackie Chan Special Edition goes beyond its rarity.

Jackie Chan’s association with Mitsubishi was already well established by the time this project appeared. His action movies frequently featured Mitsubishi vehicles, helping introduce Japanese performance cars to audiences around the world.

Thunderbolt, released in 1995, became particularly memorable among car enthusiasts for its extensive use of performance machinery and high-speed action sequences.

Three years later, Who Am I? continued that connection, further strengthening the relationship between Jackie Chan and Mitsubishi’s performance image.

That history gives the special edition an unusual place in the Evolution family.

It is not simply a limited-production Japanese performance car. It represents the intersection of Mitsubishi’s rally heritage, Ralliart’s motorsport identity, Japanese tuning culture, and Jackie Chan’s global movie career.

And with only 50 examples produced, finding one today is considerably more difficult than finding a regular Lancer Evolution VIII.

Why Collectors Want One

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution has never suffered from a lack of special editions. Mitsubishi produced numerous limited variants throughout the Evolution’s long history, many of which became highly desirable among JDM collectors.

But the Jackie Chan edition has something most of them don’t: a genuine celebrity connection.

The name on the headrests isn’t simply a marketing badge. It connects the car to a period when Jackie Chan and Mitsubishi were deeply intertwined through some of the most recognizable Asian action films of the 1990s.

That makes provenance especially important.

For collectors, an original example with its numbered plaque, correct interior details, original bodywork, and documentation could be significantly more desirable than an ordinary Evolution modified to look like one.

In my view, the Jackie Chan Special Edition is one of those rare Japanese performance cars where the story is almost as valuable as the machine itself. The Lancer Evolution VIII already has legendary status thanks to its rally-bred engineering and 4G63 turbocharged engine, but adding Jackie Chan, Ralliart, and FireSports to the equation creates a genuinely unusual piece of automotive culture. With only 50 cars built, this is the kind of Evolution that deserves to be preserved rather than heavily modified, because once these cars disappear into private collections, finding another one could become almost impossible.

A Forgotten Gem of the Evolution Era

Today, the Lancer Evolution VIII remains one of the most celebrated Japanese performance cars of its generation.

But among thousands of standard and modified Evolutions, the Jackie Chan Special Edition stands apart.

Only 50 examples were created. Each carries a production number. Each represents a unique collaboration. And each is tied to one of the biggest action stars in the world.

For Mitsubishi and JDM enthusiasts, that combination makes the car far more than another rare Evo.

It is a piece of Japanese automotive and pop culture history.
