A unique scene unfolded at the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix as an unexpected figure appeared among the professional photographers working around the Hungaroring circuit. Instead of enjoying the race from a VIP lounge or the exclusive Paddock Club, Petr Pavel, the President of the Czech Republic, stepped trackside with a professional camera in hand.
Wearing an official FIA-accredited media vest and carrying a long-lens camera, the 64-year-old president looked no different from a professional motorsport photographer, capturing the high-speed action of Formula 1 cars as they attacked the corners and raced down the Hungarian circuit.
A Long-Time Passion for Motorsport Photography
Petr Pavel’s appearance at the F1 Hungarian Grand Prix was not a political appearance or a publicity stunt. Photography, especially motorsport photography, has been one of his long-standing passions.
During his time at Hungaroring, Pavel was accompanied by Czech Formula 1 photographer Jiří Křenek, who helped guide him through the world of professional racing photography. The Czech president was seen carefully searching for the perfect angles and moments behind the lens.
This was not Pavel’s first experience documenting major racing events. The former Czech Army Chief of Staff and former Chairman of the NATO Military Committee has followed motorsport around the world, building a portfolio that includes some of the biggest events in racing.
Among the events he has photographed are:
- 24 Hours of Le Mans in France
- Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia
- MotoGP and World Superbike at Brno Circuit in the Czech Republic
- NASCAR races in the United States
During the Dakar Rally, Pavel even chose to experience the event like a regular fan, camping alongside spectators rather than staying in luxury accommodation. His decision showed his genuine passion for the atmosphere and culture of motorsport.
Photography With a Social Mission
For Petr Pavel, photography is more than just a personal hobby. His work has also been used to support charitable causes.
His Dakar Rally photographs were previously displayed at the National Technical Museum in Prague. In addition, a photo album featuring his work was auctioned and successfully raised around €30,000 (approximately Rp530 million).
The entire amount was donated to support children, elderly people, and single parents across the Czech Republic.
A Special Meeting With FIA President
Although Pavel attended the Hungarian Grand Prix in an informal role as a photographer, he still found time for a brief meeting with FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem before returning to his camera duties around the circuit.
Petr Pavel’s presence became one of the most interesting stories behind the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend.
