The annual Monterey Car Week auctions are expected to make automotive history, with total sales projected to reach an incredible $500 million (around Rp7.9 trillion). The surge is being fueled by a new wave of younger collectors who are rapidly reshaping the global luxury car market.
If the estimated sales figure of $470 million to $500 million becomes reality, this year’s event will surpass the previous record of $471 million, set during the 2022 Monterey Car Week auctions.
A New Generation Is Changing the Collector Car Market

Millennials and Gen Z buyers are now becoming a powerful force in the collector car world. Unlike previous generations that focused heavily on classic vehicles from the 1950s and 1960s, younger collectors are turning their attention toward modern supercars and hypercars from the 1990s and 2000s.
This shift has created a major difference in market performance:
- Modern Supercar Index: Up nearly 30% in recent years.
- Blue-Chip Classic Car Index: Down slightly by around 2% over the same period.
Icons such as the Ferrari F40, Ferrari F50, Ferrari Enzo, Bugatti Veyron, and Koenigsegg models have become some of the most desirable vehicles among wealthy young collectors. Several of these cars have seen their values increase dramatically, with some models reportedly doubling in price within just two years.
High-Value Auction Highlights
Among the most anticipated vehicles at this year’s auctions are several ultra-rare machines, including:
- 1996 McLaren F1 GTR — Expected to become one of the most valuable lots, with an estimated price of around $35 million.

- 2023 Ferrari Daytona SP3 — Predicted to sell for more than $10 million, reflecting the growing demand for modern limited-production Ferraris.

The arrival of younger, high-net-worth collectors signals a new era in the automotive auction world. While traditional classics remain highly valued, modern hypercars are increasingly taking center stage as the next generation of collectible icons.
The future of car collecting is shifting — from vintage legends of the past to technological masterpieces of the modern era.
