Ferrari Sends a Warning Shot at Monza: Leclerc and Hamilton Dominate FP1 as New Engine Shows Promise

Ferrari has fired the first warning shot of the Italian Grand Prix weekend.

In front of thousands of passionate Tifosi at Monza, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton delivered a dream start for the Scuderia by locking out the top two positions in Free Practice 1, giving Ferrari fans a glimpse of what could be a special home race.

With a new power unit introduced for its biggest race of the season, Ferrari arrived at Monza with one clear mission: fight for victory on home soil. Leclerc immediately proved the upgrade package has potential, setting the fastest lap of the session with a 1:23.008 on Medium tyres.

The Monégasque driver was 0.173 seconds faster than seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who continued to adapt to life at Ferrari while showing impressive early pace.

For Ferrari, seeing both cars at the top of the timing screens was the perfect opening statement. After years of frustration at Monza, the legendary Italian team finally appears ready to fight back.

Mercedes’ George Russell finished third fastest, just 0.304 seconds behind Leclerc, although his time came on the softer compound tyres. Meanwhile, Liam Lawson produced one of the biggest surprises of the session, finishing fourth on his return to Red Bull Racing after replacing the injured Isack Hadjar.

The biggest disappointment for Mercedes came with home hero Kimi Antonelli. The Italian rookie could only manage sixth place, more than six-tenths behind Leclerc, and his weekend has already been damaged by a grid penalty after Mercedes exceeded its power unit allocation.

Antonelli is now expected to start Sunday’s race from the back of the grid, turning his home Grand Prix into an uphill battle.

Meanwhile, reigning world champion Lando Norris finished sixth as McLaren finally introduced its controversial rotating H-Wing, an aerodynamic innovation designed to improve performance on Monza’s long straights.

The device immediately became one of the biggest talking points in the paddock, although McLaren is unlikely to have revealed its full potential during the opening session.

Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad continued to impress, placing seventh ahead of Gabriel Bortoleto’s Audi, Franco Colapinto’s Alpine and Paul Aron, who was one of four young drivers given an FP1 opportunity.

Oscar Piastri had a quieter start to the weekend, ending FP1 in 11th place, while Max Verstappen watched from the sidelines as Red Bull gave his car to Ayumu Iwasa. The Japanese driver finished 17th.

The session was also interrupted early when Colton Herta’s Cadillac suffered a technical issue less than 20 minutes into the session, forcing out the red flag and ending his latest F1 appearance prematurely.

Is Ferrari Finally Ready to Conquer Monza Again?

Ferrari could not have written a better opening chapter to its home Grand Prix weekend. A one-two finish in FP1, a new engine upgrade and two world-class drivers at the front have created genuine excitement around the Scuderia.

But Formula 1 has taught us many times that Friday glory does not guarantee Sunday success.

McLaren and Red Bull are unlikely to have shown their true pace yet, and Mercedes could still be a threat once qualifying arrives. The real battle begins when every team turns up the engine modes and searches for that perfect lap around the legendary Monza circuit.

The big question is simple: has Ferrari finally built a car capable of winning at home, or is this just another Friday illusion?

Ferrari looks stronger than expected, and the combination of Leclerc’s Monza confidence and Hamilton’s experience could make them genuine contenders this weekend. A Ferrari victory at Monza would not just be a result, it would be a statement.

What do you think? Can Charles Leclerc finally deliver a home victory for Ferrari, or will McLaren, Red Bull, or Mercedes steal the spotlight at Monza? Share your thoughts in the comments.
