GEORGE RUSSELL EDGES MAX VERSTAPPEN IN CHAOTIC AZERBAIJAN GP TO CLAIM VICTORY

George Russell survived a chaotic and incident-packed Azerbaijan Grand Prix to beat Max Verstappen by just 0.1 seconds and secure his third victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season.

The Mercedes driver looked in control for much of the race, but a late charge from Verstappen turned the final laps into a dramatic battle for victory around the unforgiving Baku City Circuit.

Russell made a strong start from pole position and quickly established a lead over Oscar Piastri, while the Red Bull pair of Verstappen and Isack Hadjar fought their way forward. Behind them, several incidents and crashes repeatedly disrupted the race, eventually producing multiple Safety Car periods.

When the chequered flag finally fell after 51 laps, Russell had held off Verstappen by the smallest of margins. The Dutchman was forced to settle for second, while Hadjar completed a double podium for Red Bull in third.

Charles Leclerc finished fourth for Ferrari, ahead of championship leader Kimi Antonelli, who produced an impressive recovery drive after starting only 16th following his qualifying crash. Lewis Hamilton finished sixth, while Arvid Lindblad took seventh ahead of Esteban Ocon.

Oliver Bearman and Carlos Sainz completed the top 10, with Haas finally scoring points with both cars for the first time this season.

RUSSELL MAKES THE MOST OF POLE

Russell entered the race with confidence after producing a stunning lap in Q3 to take pole position by 0.837 seconds over Leclerc, the biggest qualifying margin of the season.

Antonelli, meanwhile, had suffered a major setback by hitting the wall at Turn 1 during the opening segment of qualifying. The damage forced him out of the session and left the Italian starting from 16th.

There were also several grid penalties before the race. Sainz dropped from ninth to 14th after a yellow-flag infringement, while Sergio Perez was penalised for impeding Piastri. Both Aston Martin drivers, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, were also sent to the back of the grid after taking additional power-unit elements.

The opening laps immediately showed how unpredictable Baku could be.

Russell got away cleanly while Piastri moved into second, with Leclerc holding third before coming under pressure from Norris and Hadjar. Verstappen also made early progress, passing both Gasly and Hamilton.

Hadjar soon recovered fourth place from Norris before overtaking Leclerc for third. Verstappen followed through and moved past the Ferrari, leaving Piastri increasingly vulnerable to the Red Bull attack.

Verstappen eventually passed Hadjar on the main straight after a team instruction, then began closing rapidly on Piastri, who was struggling with his rear tyres.

ANTONELLI’S LONG RECOVERY BEGINS

While Russell continued to build his advantage at the front, Antonelli quietly worked his way through the field.

The Mercedes driver passed Lindblad, Sainz and Ocon to climb into 13th, although the gap to his teammate at the front continued to grow.

Russell had built an advantage of around five seconds and appeared comfortable until the first signs of trouble emerged.

On Lap 9, Aston Martin instructed Stroll to retire because of a water-pressure problem. The Canadian pulled off safely without requiring a Safety Car.

As the race developed, tyre strategy became increasingly important. The top 10 was split between medium and soft compounds, with Russell, Norris, Verstappen, Gasly and Colapinto among those starting on mediums, while Leclerc, Piastri, Hadjar and Hamilton were among those opting for soft tyres.

The midfield battle was equally intense. Antonelli took advantage of a fight between Liam Lawson and Alex Albon to make further progress, while Hamilton eventually found a way past Norris after the McLaren driver ran deep into Turn 5.

CHAOS ERUPTS

The race changed dramatically when mistakes began arriving in quick succession.

Russell, nearly 10 seconds clear of Piastri, brushed the wall at Turn 15 and immediately asked Mercedes to monitor his tyre pressures.

Norris then locked up heavily on the high-speed start-finish section, running wide and losing positions to Pierre Gasly and Antonelli.

Albon suffered an even bigger problem.

The Williams driver locked his brakes and crashed into the barriers at Turn 6, bringing out the first Safety Car of the race.

The leaders took the opportunity to pit, with fresh tyres allowing them to push toward the finish. Red Bull executed a clean double-stack for Verstappen and Hadjar, preserving their positions.

Hadjar was already thinking about a potential 2-3 finish and asked the team for help dealing with Piastri. However, the Frenchman soon received a warning about gearbox vibrations.

The restart itself created even more drama.

Colapinto braked suddenly approaching Turn 1 and collided with his Alpine teammate Gasly. Norris was unable to avoid the incident and was also caught up in the crash.

All three cars were forced out of the race, triggering another Safety Car period.

Meanwhile, tensions also rose inside Racing Bulls after Lindblad made contact with Lawson.

Lawson’s reaction was sarcastic and blunt over team radio:

“I love getting hit by my teammate. That’s really cool.”

PIASTRI’S PODIUM DISAPPEARS

When racing resumed, Russell once again controlled the restart and remained ahead of Verstappen.

Piastri, however, suffered a devastating mistake while running third.

The McLaren driver locked his brakes into Turn 1, spun and dropped all the way to 15th place, turning what had looked like a podium finish into a fight for recovery points.

The chaos allowed Antonelli to climb to sixth, and with eight laps remaining he overtook Hamilton on the main straight.

At the front, Verstappen was closing rapidly on Russell.

The gap fell to just a few tenths of a second, setting up a tense final battle around the narrow streets of Baku. Russell pushed his Mercedes to the limit while Verstappen stayed close enough to threaten an overtake.

Another yellow flag briefly threatened to disrupt the fight when Valtteri Bottas crashed his Cadillac, but the race remained green for the final lap.

Verstappen pulled alongside Russell on the start-finish straight, but the Mercedes driver held firm.

Russell crossed the line just 0.1 seconds ahead of Verstappen to claim the eighth victory of his Formula 1 career.

RED BULL DOUBLE PODIUM AS HADJAR TAKES THIRD

Hadjar completed Red Bull’s double podium in third, followed by Leclerc in fourth and Antonelli in fifth.

Hamilton finished sixth, while Lindblad snatched seventh from Ocon at the finish.

Bearman and Sainz rounded out the points-paying positions, giving Haas both cars inside the top 10 for the first time this season.

Hulkenberg finished 11th for Audi, followed by Lawson in 12th and Gabriel Bortoleto in 13th.

Piastri could only recover to 14th, ahead of Perez in 15th and Bottas in 16th before his late crash left him classified as a non-finisher.

Colapinto, Gasly, Norris and Albon also failed to finish, while both Aston Martin drivers suffered separate mechanical retirements.

A CHAOTIC RACE THAT DELIVERED A CLASSIC FINISH

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix once again proved why Baku can produce some of Formula 1’s most unpredictable races. Russell appeared to have the victory comfortably under control for much of the afternoon, only for late pressure from Verstappen to turn the finish into a last-gasp showdown.

For Russell, the victory marks another major step in an increasingly impressive 2026 campaign. For Verstappen, missing victory by just one tenth of a second will make second place feel particularly painful.

Antonelli also deserves credit for recovering from 16th on the grid to fifth, while Hadjar’s third-place finish gave Red Bull two cars on the podium.

The final battle between Russell and Verstappen was exactly what Baku is famous for: tight walls, huge pressure and absolutely no margin for error. The fact that the race was decided by just a tenth of a second made an already chaotic Grand Prix even more memorable.
