George Russell Dominates Monza FP3 as Hamilton and Verstappen Chase Ahead of Italian GP Qualifying

George Russell continued his impressive form at the Italian Grand Prix by comfortably topping the final practice session at Monza, delivering a strong statement ahead of qualifying at the legendary Temple of Speed.

The Mercedes driver set the fastest lap of FP3, finishing more than two tenths of a second ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who placed second for Ferrari. Max Verstappen completed the top three for Red Bull Racing, while Kimi Antonelli and Lando Norris rounded out the top five.

Russell’s pace gives Mercedes a major boost heading into qualifying, with the Briton looking like a serious contender for pole position. His advantage could become even more valuable as Hamilton is set to start the race with a grid penalty, potentially increasing Russell’s chances of converting his strong pace into a front-row start.

Despite Russell’s impressive performance, the battle behind him remains incredibly tight. The gap from second place down to eighth was separated by just three tenths of a second, setting the stage for a dramatic qualifying session at Monza.

Quiet FP3 Session, Lawson Spins at Turn 1

The final practice session was relatively calm, with limited incidents across the field. One of the biggest moments came when Liam Lawson lost control and spun at the first corner, although the incident did not significantly interrupt the session.

Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri endured a frustrating afternoon. The McLaren driver repeatedly expressed his disappointment over team radio, complaining about traffic and his difficulty finding a clean lap with a useful slipstream for his qualifying simulation.

Piastri eventually finished eighth after his final flying lap was compromised by Russell, who disrupted his final attempt.

Hamilton and Verstappen Clash During Final Runs

Tension briefly rose during the closing stages of FP3 when Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen found themselves fighting for track position.

Hamilton made a clever move to overtake Verstappen through the final corner before beginning his qualifying run. However, the Red Bull driver immediately responded by diving past Hamilton at Turn 1, ruining the flying laps for both drivers.

The incident was noted by the stewards, but no further action was taken.

Williams Drivers Under Investigation

The session also saw both Williams drivers come under investigation for a potential yellow flag violation.

Alex Albon was additionally given a warning after using the escape road during the session.

With Russell showing impressive speed, Ferrari looking competitive on home soil, and Verstappen still within striking distance, the Italian Grand Prix qualifying session promises to deliver a thrilling battle for pole position.
