The VW Kombi Spirit Returns: Meet the New Electric ID. California Cruise Camper Van

The dream of automotive enthusiasts and adventure seekers has finally become a reality. After years of anticipation, Volkswagen (VW) has officially transformed its iconic electric van, the ID. Buzz, into a true camper van called the Volkswagen ID. California Cruise.

Many fans believe this is the move Volkswagen should have made from the beginning, considering the strong heritage of the legendary VW Kombi (Type 2), a vehicle that has long been associated with camping, road trips, and the freedom of exploration.

With the ID. California Cruise, Volkswagen brings that classic camper lifestyle into the electric era. The model is based on the ID. Buzz Pro and combines zero-emission technology with practical camping features designed for modern travelers.

A Fully Equipped Camping Experience Inside the Cabin

Volkswagen designed the ID. California Cruise with a variety of functional upgrades aimed at overlanders, campers, and long-distance travelers.

Modular Sleeping Area

The van comes with an integrated folding mattress system, creating a comfortable sleeping area for overnight adventures.

Dining Area Setup

The interior includes a foldable table paired with two portable camping chairs, allowing users to enjoy meals or relax while staying at a campsite.

Maximum Privacy

All windows are equipped with blackout window blinds, helping block outside light while providing extra privacy when the van is used for sleeping.

Electrochromic Glass Roof

One of the standout features is the optional smart glass roof. The electrochromic system allows the glass to switch instantly from transparent to opaque at the push of a button.

This feature helps occupants control natural lighting inside the cabin and creates a more comfortable atmosphere during camping trips.

Exclusive California Mode

Volkswagen also introduces a dedicated California Mode, allowing the vehicle’s electrical systems, lighting, and climate control (HVAC/air conditioning) to continue operating while parked.

The built-in battery system is claimed to support continuous HVAC operation for up to 48 hours, depending on battery charge level and conditions.
