Jeep goes back to where it all began, blending an 80-year-old civilian Jeep legacy with modern Wrangler attitude.
More than 80 years after the Willys CJ-2A first brought Jeep capability into civilian life, Jeep is returning to its roots with the 2027 Jeep Wrangler JL-2A, the 11th model in the brand’s year-long Twelve 4 Twelve series.
This is not simply another limited-edition Wrangler with a few retro badges.
The JL-2A is a deliberate tribute to the vehicle that helped transform Jeep from a military machine into a name that could serve farmers, ranchers, industrial workers, and everyday Americans.
“CJ-2A represented an important chapter in the history of the Jeep brand,” said Branden Coté, CEO of the Jeep brand. “More than eight decades later, the 2027 Wrangler JL-2A completes that story.”
And Jeep has gone considerably further than simply painting a Wrangler in an old-school color.
From the Battlefield to the Backyard

The story began in July 1945.
With World War II coming to an end, the proven Willys MB military Jeep formula was adapted for civilian life with the introduction of the Willys CJ-2A.
Built by Willys-Overland in Toledo, Ohio, the CJ-2A became the first Jeep specifically designed for civilian use and established the “CJ,” or Civilian Jeep, lineage.
It brought the rugged capability developed on the battlefield into farms, ranches, and industrial applications.
The CJ-2A also introduced several practical features, including a tailgate and rear power takeoff, along with larger headlights and the seven-slot grille that would eventually become one of the most recognizable signatures in the automotive world.
Its personality was just as distinctive as its purpose.
Post-war color combinations such as Harvest Tan with Sunset Red wheels and Pasture Green with Autumn Yellow wheels gave the utilitarian Jeep a surprisingly bold character.
Those original combinations now provide direct inspiration for the modern JL-2A.
Classic Jeep Details, Modern Wrangler Attitude

The 2027 Wrangler JL-2A takes those 1945 design cues and drops them onto the modern Wrangler platform.
For the two-door model, Gobi becomes the hero color, while the four-door version gets the ’41 color. Buyers can also choose from Bright White, Sting Gray, Ghost, and Joose.
Gobi itself is inspired by the original CJ-2A’s Harvest Tan.
Then there are the wheels.
The JL-2A receives exclusive 17-inch retro wheels painted in Joose, a modern interpretation of the original CJ-2A’s Sunset Red wheels.
They are paired with standard 33-inch BFGoodrich KO2 All-Terrain tires, ensuring that this Wrangler’s vintage appearance doesn’t come at the expense of its off-road credentials.
Body-color fender flares and a three-piece hardtop create a cleaner, more cohesive appearance, while orange tow hooks at both ends add a splash of contrast.
The iconic seven-slot grille is finished with dark metallic gray accents, giving the classic Jeep face a more contemporary appearance.
In other words, Jeep has managed to make the Wrangler look nostalgic without making it look like a museum piece.
The Willys Influence Continues Inside
The retro treatment becomes even more interesting once you open the doors.
The JL-2A gets what Jeep describes as a newly developed interior color and material combination for the Wrangler, combining premium materials with bold colors and details inspired by the original Willys.
The seats are trimmed in Heritage Tan Nappa leather, with a matching Nappa PUR instrument-panel center pad.
The lower door panels, lower instrument panel and center console receive a Rich Bison Brown finish, creating a warmer and more luxurious cabin.
Then comes the contrast.
Desert Orange stitching runs throughout the interior, visually connecting the cabin to the Joose-painted wheels outside.
There are also several smaller details that should appeal to Jeep history enthusiasts.
A unique satin-chrome Willys-Overland shift-lever medallion pays tribute to the brand’s origins, while the HVAC vent graphics feature the iconic seven-slot grille on one side and a Willys silhouette on the other.
Even the rear swing gate gets its own historical reference.
The exclusive JL-2A rear swing-gate plaque replicates the artwork found on the data plate of the original CJ-2A dashboard, including agricultural and industrial imagery representing the vehicle’s original missions.
It’s exactly the kind of detail that can easily be overlooked in a showroom—but becomes much more meaningful once you know the history behind it.
Modern Equipment Comes Standard
Despite all the nostalgia, Jeep hasn’t forgotten that this is a modern Wrangler.
The JL-2A comes standard with the Convenience Package, including remote start, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a universal garage-door opener.
A front TrailCam camera with an integrated washer is also standard, giving drivers a clearer view of obstacles when the trail gets technical.
So while the styling reaches back to 1945, the equipment is firmly planted in the 2020s.
Pricing and Availability
The 2027 Jeep Wrangler JL-2A will be available to order starting in October 2026.
The special package carries an MSRP of $4,995, bringing its unique styling and equipment to a price just $115 higher than a similarly equipped Wrangler Rubicon.
That positioning makes the JL-2A particularly interesting.
This isn’t simply a cosmetic package aimed at people who want a vintage-looking Wrangler. Jeep is effectively selling a piece of its civilian history wrapped around a modern off-road icon.
In my view, the Wrangler JL-2A is one of the more convincing ways Jeep could celebrate its history.
Retro editions often fall into the trap of adding a few stickers, special colors and badges before calling it a heritage model. The JL-2A feels more thoughtful because the connection to the original CJ-2A runs through the colors, wheels, interior materials, graphics and even the rear swing-gate plaque.
More importantly, Jeep hasn’t sacrificed the identity of the Wrangler to make it retro.
The 33-inch BFGoodrich KO2 tires, TrailCam and modern equipment make it clear that this is still a Wrangler designed to go exploring, not a collectible that belongs behind glass.
The $4,995 package price is certainly not insignificant, but considering that it sits only $115 above a similarly equipped Rubicon, Jeep appears to be targeting buyers who want something more distinctive without giving up serious capability.
And perhaps that’s exactly what the CJ-2A represented in the first place: a practical machine that could work hard during the week and go almost anywhere when the opportunity came.
Eighty years later, the formula hasn’t changed that much.
Only the technology has.
What do you think of the 2027 Jeep Wrangler JL-2A? Does Jeep get the retro treatment right, or would you rather have the original CJ-2A? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
