Lando Norris secured a crucial victory at the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix after surviving a chaotic race at Zandvoort, where changing weather conditions, multiple incidents, and a shocking early retirement for Max Verstappen created one of the most dramatic races of the season.
The McLaren driver fought hard against the Mercedes duo throughout the race before eventually crossing the finish line 11.5 seconds ahead of Kimi Antonelli, while George Russell completed the podium in third place.
Verstappen’s Home Race Ends in Disaster
Drama started even before the lights went out, as rain arrived around the Zandvoort circuit. Race Control decided that drivers would complete one lap behind the Safety Car before returning to the grid for a standing start.
Starting from pole position, Norris made a brilliant getaway and immediately took control of the race. Behind him, Kimi Antonelli made an impressive move to overtake teammate George Russell and move into second place, while Charles Leclerc followed in fourth.
Oscar Piastri started strongly in fifth, ahead of Lewis Hamilton. However, Hamilton had contact with Max Verstappen during the opening laps, while Verstappen also had a minor clash with Liam Lawson during a battle for position.
The biggest shock came when Verstappen crashed out of his home race.
The Red Bull driver lost control of his RB22 at Turn 14 after running over the inside kerb. The car was thrown into the outside concrete barrier, heavily damaging the left side of the machine.
“Ah, there it is. Ah, beep! Sorry,” Verstappen said over team radio after the incident.
Fortunately, the four-time world champion was able to walk away safely from the crash.
Behind the incident, Gabriel Bortoleto also had a frightening moment when his Audi spun around, but the young driver quickly confirmed that his car was still fine.
Restart Drama Creates More Chaos
Following the red flag, the drivers returned to the pit lane while waiting for the race restart. However, the drama continued.
Arvid Lindblad and Franco Colapinto were investigated for allegedly overtaking under yellow flags at Turn 14. Both drivers were later handed drive-through penalties.
When the race restarted, another unusual situation occurred as some drivers at the back of the grid faced red lights while preparing to leave the pit lane.
Oliver Bearman then suffered a mechanical issue and stopped on the way to the grid, forcing another formation lap before racing could resume.
On the second start attempt, Norris again launched perfectly and tried to squeeze Antonelli towards the wall. However, Antonelli had the inside line into Turn 1 and managed to take the lead.
Oscar Piastri moved into third place ahead of George Russell, who immediately came under pressure from Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.
Liam Lawson remained in seventh place for Red Bull after surviving the early chaos.
Norris Delivers a Statement Victory
After regaining the lead, Norris controlled the race with confidence and showed excellent pace in difficult conditions. His victory was not only about speed but also about patience, strategy, and avoiding mistakes when many rivals struggled.
