The Wheels of Independence: Exploring Indonesia’s Presidential Cars from Soekarno to Prabowo

As Indonesia celebrates its 81st Independence Anniversary, the nation once again reflects on its long journey of leadership, history, and progress. Beyond political decisions and state speeches, another unique element has quietly recorded the story of Indonesia’s presidents: their official state vehicles.

Presidential cars are more than just transportation. They represent power, security, diplomacy, and the technological progress of each era — from the early days of independence to the rise of Indonesia’s own automotive and defense industries.

Soekarno (1945–1967): A Symbol of Struggle and Diplomacy

Indonesia’s first president, Soekarno, used a collection of vehicles that reflected the nation’s early independence era and international relationships.

The most historic among them was the 1939 Buick 8, widely recognized as the first official presidential car of Indonesia. The vehicle was taken from Japanese authorities by Indonesian youths and later handed over to Soekarno shortly after independence.

During his presidency, Soekarno also owned several prestigious vehicles, including the Chrysler Imperial, Cadillac 75, Lincoln Cosmopolitan, and Soviet-built luxury cars such as the GAZ 13 Chaika and ZIL 111, which were diplomatic gifts from the Soviet Union.

One of the most iconic cars from his era was the Mercedes-Benz 600 W100 “Grand Mercedes”, a legendary luxury limousine that became a symbol of global leadership during the 1960s.

Soeharto (1967–1998): The Era of Maximum Security

During Soeharto’s 32-year presidency, security became a major priority for the state.

His official vehicle was the Mercedes-Benz 500SEL (W126) Limousine, a heavily modified armored sedan equipped with bullet-resistant protection.

The car was designed to provide maximum security for the president during official duties. In the final years of his administration, Soeharto also used the Mercedes-Benz S600 (W140) as his presidential vehicle.

B.J. Habibie (1998–1999): A President with a Passion for Classic Cars

President B.J. Habibie continued using the Mercedes-Benz S600 W140 as his official state vehicle.

Outside of politics, Habibie was also known as an automotive enthusiast. His personal collection included several legendary cars, including the extremely rare Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, one of the most iconic classic cars ever produced.

Abdurrahman Wahid / Gus Dur (1999–2001): A Simple Presidential Style

Known for his humble personality and close connection with ordinary people, President Abdurrahman Wahid, better known as Gus Dur, maintained a simpler public image.

For official duties, he used the Mercedes-Benz S600 W140. However, one of the most memorable vehicles associated with him was a Toyota Land Cruiser with the special license plate B 1926 AW. The number 1926 referred to the founding year of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU).

Megawati Soekarnoputri (2001–2004): Continuing the VVIP Sedan Tradition

During Megawati Soekarnoputri’s presidency, Indonesia continued using the Mercedes-Benz S600 W140 as part of the official presidential fleet.

She was also frequently seen using luxury sedans such as the Lexus LS for various activities outside formal state events.

Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (2004–2014): Entering the Modern Security Era

Under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Indonesia upgraded its presidential fleet with a stronger focus on protection and advanced security technology.

The government introduced the Mercedes-Benz S600 Guard W221, an armored luxury sedan designed with high-level protection against ballistic threats and explosions.

The vehicle featured advanced security specifications, including VR7/VR9 protection standards, among the highest levels available for civilian armored vehicles.

Joko Widodo (2014–2024): Modernizing the Presidential Fleet

When Joko Widodo became president in 2014, he initially continued using the Mercedes-Benz S600 Guard W221 from the previous administration.

Later, the presidential fleet was upgraded with the Mercedes-Benz S600 Guard W222, featuring improved technology, enhanced protection, and a more modern design.

Prabowo Subianto (2024–Present): A New Era of Indonesian Automotive Pride

Under President Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia entered a new chapter in presidential transportation history.

For the first time, the country’s president uses a vehicle developed domestically: the MV3 Garuda Limousine, created by PT Pindad, Indonesia’s state-owned defense manufacturer.

The vehicle was specially developed as a VVIP limousine with armored protection, advanced security features, and a strong message of national industrial capability.

From Independence Symbol to National Pride

The evolution of Indonesia’s presidential cars reflects the nation’s transformation over more than eight decades.

From the historic Buick 8 that witnessed the early days of independence, to advanced armored Mercedes-Benz limousines, and finally the locally developed Pindad MV3 Garuda Limousine, each vehicle carries a unique story.

The presidential garage is not simply a collection of expensive cars. It represents Indonesia’s journey — from struggle and diplomacy to modernization and pride in its own engineering achievements.
